Creag a' Chlamhain

The walk up Creag a' Chlamhain from Ballater is a proper Highland scramble - nothing too technical, but it demands respect. You're climbing to just over 2,600 feet, and the final push rewards you with views that sprawl across the Cairngorms. On a clear day the panorama is genuinely worth the effort.

Start early. Most walkers park near Ballater and head up the glen, which can take between three and four hours depending on your pace and how often you stop to catch your breath. The terrain is mixed - moorland gives way to rougher ground, and there's a bit of loose scree near the top that keeps things interesting. Wear proper boots, not trainers.

This is a walk for anyone comfortable on Scottish hills. Young teenagers with hill experience will manage it fine, but it's not a family amble - more suited to walkers who know what they're doing. The views justify the slog: you get a real sense of being properly in the mountains rather than just looking at them from a car park.

Wildlife spotters might see red grouse, and if you're lucky, golden eagles do work this area. Winter transforms the whole experience into something alpine and serious - not for casual visitors then.
