Crayke Park

The views from Crayke village stretch across the Vale of Pickering - proper expansive stuff that makes the short walk up worthwhile. This is a nature reserve that rewards walkers with something genuine rather than manufactured: rolling chalk grassland, wildflowers when they're in season, and the kind of quiet you don't get near Bridlington.

It's essentially a hill with paths, nothing fancy. You're looking at perhaps an hour here unless you're the type to sit and identify every plant species. The chalk grassland supports orchids and butterflies - genuinely interesting if you care about that sort of thing, though it won't blow anyone's mind if you're just after a nice walk. Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming; older children and keen walkers will get proper value from it.

The steep bits are actually steeper than the distance suggests - don't underestimate it if you're not used to hill walking. Best visited spring through early autumn when the wildflowers are actually flowering. Winter and late autumn it's just grass.

If you're based at Thorpe Hall Cottages or Parkdean Resorts Barmston Beach, both within an easy drive, Crayke makes a solid morning or afternoon outing. It sits well between the coast and inland activities - nothing ground-breaking, but genuinely peaceful and the views justify the effort. The fact it's a working nature reserve rather than a manicured attraction actually works in its favour.
