Crawter Hill

The climb up Crawter Hill rewards you with proper views across Exmoor and out towards the Bristol Channel. It's not a massive undertaking - more of a brisk walk than a serious hike - but the effort gets you away from Minehead's seafront crowds and into something altogether wilder.

What you're looking at is moorland and rolling Somerset landscape, the kind of terrain that makes you understand why people come to this corner of the country. On a clear day the vistas stretch far enough to justify the trudge up. The path itself is straightforward enough, though it can get boggy after rain and the wind up there is no joke.

This suits walkers who want something achievable without committing half the day to it. If you're staying at Minehead Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Butlins down the coast, it's an easy afternoon outing - maybe an hour and a half each way depending on your pace and how often you stop to catch your breath and take photos. Kids will manage it fine unless they're particularly resistant to any gradient whatsoever.

Go when the weather's settled. You'll get nothing from this in thick mist, which happens often enough up here on Exmoor's edge. Spring and early autumn tend to be best - less crowded than peak summer, clearer light than winter.

It works well as a counterpoint to coastal days in Minehead. You get the landscape without the seaside crowds, and it justifies a proper map and compass moment before heading back down.
