Crawick Multiverse

You'll spot the earthworks before you fully understand what you're looking at. Crawick Multiverse is a 55-acre land art installation near Sanquhar that feels like someone's dropped a series of interlocking spirals and geometric patterns into the Scottish Lowlands and left them there to mess with your head. Created by Charles Jencks, the landscape artist behind the Scottish National Museum of Scotland garden, it's genuinely unlike anything else you'll encounter in Dumfries & Galloway.

Walking the site takes you through grass mounds, stone circles, and viewing platforms that only make full sense from above - which is partly the point. There's something almost meditative about it, though some visitors find it a bit abstract for their liking. The views across the moorland are proper lovely, and the whole thing works as a strange sort of pilgrimage walk if you're into that sort of thing.

It's free to visit and open year-round, though it's best done in decent weather when the ground isn't waterlogged. Allow a good hour to wander properly; you can rush it in 30 minutes but you'll miss half the experience. Families with older kids will get more from it than toddlers, honestly - it's not a playground, and the appeal is fairly cerebral.

Stay at Sunnyside Lodges just down the road if you want somewhere comfortable to base yourself. Crawick works brilliantly as part of a broader Lowlands exploration, though it's not the sort of attraction you'd build a whole holiday around.
