Crannog

The reconstructed Iron Age dwelling sits on the shore of what was once a loch, just outside Hawick, and it's genuinely one of those places that stops you mid-walk. What you're looking at is a crannog - a prehistoric roundhouse built on stilts over water, recreated based on archaeological digs that happened right here. The structure itself is modest but compelling: a thatched roundhouse with a timber frame, the sort of thing that would have housed an entire family and their livestock a couple of thousand years ago.

It's the kind of site that appeals most to history buffs and families with kids old enough to engage with the "how on earth did they build this?" question. Younger children might find it a bit static after twenty minutes unless you're prepared to weave in some storytelling. The real value is in the setting - you can see why someone chose this spot, the water views, the defensive potential. It's a proper archaeologically-minded detour rather than a flashy visitor attraction.

You won't need more than an hour here, and the walk from Hawick itself is straightforward. The site appears to be freely accessible, though there's little in the way of facilities - bring a packed lunch if you want to linger and soak up the landscape.
