Cranberry Rock

Getting to Cranberry Rock means a proper walk from Shrewsbury, but the effort pays off. This modest sandstone outcrop rises from the Shropshire landscape like something from a children's illustration - all craggy edges and weathered face. The rock itself isn't enormous, which might disappoint anyone expecting a dramatic peak, but that's rather the point. It rewards walkers more than it impresses drive-by visitors.

Once you're there, you get views across farmland toward the Welsh border. Nothing jaw-dropping on a hazy day, but on clear weather it's a proper vantage point. Families with older kids will find the scramble up engaging enough; younger ones might feel it's a bit of a slog for a small rock. Walkers heading out for three or four hours from Shrewsbury will incorporate it naturally into a bigger route.

The nearest bit of proper accommodation is Foxholes Campsite up near Bishops Castle, five miles away - a well-reviewed spot if you're basing yourself in the area for walking. Allow a couple of hours round trip if you're visiting Cranberry Rock solo, longer if you're mixing it with wider exploration of the Shropshire hills. There's no admission charge, no facilities, and no specific opening hours - it's a landscape feature you visit when you fancy it.
