Craigmuir Mote, dun site

A grassy mound near Ayr that barely announces itself until you're practically on top of it. Craigmuir Mote is what's left of an Iron Age dun - a prehistoric fortified dwelling - and it's the sort of place that rewards a bit of detective work rather than instant gratification.

What you get is essentially a raised earthwork, maybe twenty metres across, sitting in open countryside. There's no visitor infrastructure, no interpretation board, just the landscape and your imagination filling in what once stood here thousands of years ago. The views across South Ayrshire are decent enough, rolling and green, though hardly dramatic.

This is firmly for archaeology enthusiasts or anyone keen on Scotland's pre-Roman settlement patterns. Kids might manage ten minutes before asking why they're looking at a hill. It's a proper bit of detective archaeology rather than a family afternoon out.

Getting there is straightforward from Ayr itself - it's walkable if you're prepared for country lanes. There's no charge, no facilities, no opening hours to worry about. Allow thirty minutes maximum, unless you're genuinely fascinated by Iron Age defensive structures.
