Craigievar Castle

The first time you round that final bend and spot Craigievar rising from the Aberdeenshire landscape, you understand why locals call it the fairy-tale castle. Six storeys of pale harled walls topped with pepper-pot turrets - it's so improbably romantic that postcards barely do it justice.

This is a working castle, not a museum piece, which means the National Trust for Scotland keeps it deliberately low-key. You can wander the grounds freely and take photographs until the light goes soft, but access to the interior is restricted to guided tours only - a deliberate choice to preserve the place. The gardens are genuinely worth exploring, particularly if you've got time to kill before your tour slot.

Inside, it's all Scottish baronial excess: elaborate plasterwork ceilings, a proper gun room, and enough oak panelling to make you feel you've stepped into another century. Families with children under ten might find it a bit dry unless you time it right and catch one of their themed tours. History enthusiasts and architecture types will spend hours photographing details.

The castle sits near Muir of Fowlis, a proper drive from Aberdeen but manageable as a half-day trip.
