Craigenroe Hill

The walk up Craigenroe Hill from Perth takes about an hour if you're reasonably fit, and the views across Perthshire are genuinely worth the effort. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the Highlands - but that's rather the point. You get proper countryside perspective without needing a full day's commitment or specialist kit.

The hill itself is straightforward moorland terrain with a decent path that's well-trodden enough not to lose you. On a clear day you can see right across to the Grampians. The ground gets boggy in patches after rain, so decent boots matter more than you'd think. Allow two hours return if you're dawdling and stopping for photos.

This is ideal for families who want something more engaging than a flat park walk but don't fancy a serious hike. Older kids will manage it fine. It's also spot-on for anyone staying at Maycroft Retreat or Greenhill Farm Glamping - both within striking distance - who wants a proper outing without driving halfway across Scotland. The views make it feel like you've gone further than you actually have.

Walkers doing a longer Perthshire circuit sometimes include it as a warm-up hill, which tells you something about the grade. Go early on weekends if you want peace. The slope is steady rather than steep, which means you can actually enjoy the walk instead of grimly grinding upward. Autumn colours on the surrounding moorland are particularly good.
