Craigenfinnie

Standing at 1,253 feet, this summit near Dalbeattie offers proper views across the Solway Firth on a clear day. The walk up Craigenfinnie isn't particularly challenging - more of a steady plod through farmland and moorland than anything too taxing. Most reasonably fit folk can manage it in about an hour each way.

From the top, you'll see across to the Lake District fells and down the coast towards Rockcliffe. It's the sort of hill that rewards you with a decent panorama without demanding full mountaineering kit. The path can get a bit boggy in places after rain, so proper walking boots are sensible.

Families with older children will find it manageable, though toddlers might struggle with the distance. Keen walkers often combine it with other nearby summits for a longer day out. The summit itself is fairly unremarkable - no dramatic rocky outcrop or ancient cairn - but the views make up for any lack of drama at the top.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Kippford or Sandyhills Bay, it's a good morning's exercise before heading to the coast. The hill sits conveniently close to several caravan sites, making it an easy option for a proper Scottish hill walk without venturing too far from base camp.
