Craig Hill, broch site

The remains of a prehistoric broch sit on Craig Hill, about five miles from Tayport - a settlement built roughly 2000 years ago by Iron Age folk who clearly had an eye for a defensible position. From ground level, you're looking at low stone walls and the distinctive circular footprint of what would have been a towering roundhouse with a hollow double wall. The views across the Fife landscape are genuine compensation if the archaeology doesn't immediately grab you.

This is best suited to history buffs and anyone interested in Iron Age Scotland. Kids might find it less engaging than you'd hope - it reads more as a pile of stones than a reconstructed settlement. Plan twenty minutes, thirty if you're keen to photograph it properly and scan the interpretive board. There's no visitor facility or café, so go armed with a map and realistic expectations.

It's free to visit and accessible year-round, though winter winds make lingering unattractive. The real draw is pairing it with a broader archaeological ramble through Fife's broch sites, or using it as a quiet break from a caravan stay at Tayport Links or Larick Campsite. Both are excellent bases - particularly if you're after somewhere low-key. Given Tayport itself is a modest coastal town, Craig Hill works best as part of a day that includes other local attractions rather than as a standalone destination. Worth the short detour from your park, but don't build your whole holiday around it.
