The building itself is modest - a traditional Highland dwelling that's been restored and preserved - but it's the setting that gets you. The views across the Spey Valley are genuinely good, and on a clear day you can see right across the moorland that surrounds it.

It's not a grand tourist attraction with queues or gift shops. This is for people who like a bit of history without the fuss - folk interested in how ordinary Highland folk lived, or walkers passing through who fancy a bit of context with their views. The cottage gives you that sense of stepping back in time without feeling staged about it.

The walk up is straightforward enough from Newtonmore itself, though it's worth checking conditions after rain as the path can get soft. Allow 30 minutes each way, more if you're stopping to actually look around and soak in the scenery. There's nothing here to keep you occupied for hours, but as a half-day addition to a stay at somewhere like Invernahavon Caravan Park down the road, it works perfectly. Combines nicely with exploring Newtonmore village itself.

Bring decent shoes and a waterproof. The Highlands weather changes fast, and there's nowhere to shelter up there.
