About Cragmore Hill

Rolling farmland gives way to rougher ground as you approach this modest peak just south of Dumfries. Cragmore Hill won't challenge serious hikers - at 265 metres it's more of a gentle climb than a proper mountain - but the views across the Solway Firth to the Lake District make it well worth the effort. The summit offers a satisfying 360-degree panorama, with the Galloway Hills stretching away to the west and the distinctive outline of Criffel visible to the south. Weather permitting, you'll spot the English coast across the water. Families with older children will manage the ascent comfortably, though the paths can be muddy after rain and there's little shelter if the weather turns. Allow a good two hours for the round trip from any of the nearby parking spots. Dog walkers particularly enjoy this one - plenty of space to roam and interesting scents to investigate. The hill makes a decent afternoon outing if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Dumfries-shire. Marthrown of Mabie and the other sites in the area put you within easy striking distance, and it's the sort of walk that leaves you feeling properly exercised without being exhausted. Best tackled on a clear day when the views justify the climb.
