Crag Walk Coastal Defence Structure

The concrete defences at Crag Walk are a bracing reminder that this stretch of Suffolk coast is fighting a losing battle with the sea. What you're actually looking at is a series of reinforced barriers built to slow erosion, but they've become an unlikely focal point for coastal walks around Walton on the Naze.

It's not a conventional nature reserve attraction - there's no visitor centre or interpretive boards. Instead, you get raw coastline with a bit of industrial grit to it. The walk itself is what matters. You can stride along the shore and watch how the defences interact with the beach, or simply use it as a landmark on a longer coastal ramble. The area draws walkers and photographers more than families after a day out, though kids won't find it boring if they're into exploring rocks and spotting erosion patterns.

Free access, naturally, and you can do the walk in an hour or stretch it to two depending on tide times and how far you fancy going. Best visited outside peak summer if you want some peace. Winter storms can make it dramatic, but check conditions first.
