Crag Top

The walk up to Crag Top near Penrith rewards you with proper fell views across the Eden Valley and into Scotland on a clear day. Once you're up there, the vistas open right out. The peak itself isn't dramatic - no dramatic rock formations or summit structures - but that's rather the point. You get the views without the crowds that descend on the more famous Lake District fells.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's manageable for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the steady gradient tedious rather than thrilling. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're taking it easy. The moorland approach means weather matters - on a grey drizzly day you could be walking through cloud for most of it, so timing your visit for decent conditions is worth thinking about. Spring and early autumn tend to be cracking for visibility.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks near Penrith - Park Foot is closest at just over 3 miles - this makes for a decent half-day adventure without needing to drive into the heart of the Lakes. It's less crowded than heading up to something like Helvellyn, and you're back in time for a proper tea. The moorland walking around here is underrated, honestly.
