Crabtree Shaw

A proper Sussex woodland where you can actually breathe. Crabtree Shaw sits just outside Hassocks and feels like the sort of place locals have kept to themselves for years - which is exactly the appeal.

It's a straightforward woodland walk through mixed trees with enough space to let kids run ahead without losing sight of them. The paths are decent underfoot, nothing treacherous, and you're looking at maybe an hour if you meander. On a quiet afternoon it's genuinely peaceful, which around the South East is becoming rarer. The canopy does its job properly, so it's worth knowing about if you're visiting in summer and need some proper shade.

This works best for families after a few hours at one of the nearby parks - Downsview or Blacklands Farm are close enough that you could make it your afternoon leg. It's not a destination on its own for older kids who want dramatic views or a proper adventure, but younger ones will be entertained by the simple fact of being loose in the woods. Adult walkers will find it pleasant rather than spectacular.

Clear your boots before heading back to your caravan. The sort of place that's free to access and asks nothing of you except a bit of respect for the paths. Go when it's been dry - muddy woodland walks are fine, boggy ones less so.
