Cowdray Forest

The woodland here feels properly wild - dense, quiet, the kind of place where you actually notice birdsong. Cowdray Forest is a working nature reserve near Haywards Heath, and while it lacks the manicured polish of some Sussex attractions, that's precisely why it works. Paths wind through mixed woodland where you might spot deer, woodland birds, and if you're lucky, some of the rarer species that the reserve actively manages for. The trees are tall enough that even on a grey day it feels cathedral-like.

This isn't a "come for two hours with the kids" spot, though families with older children who can manage muddy trails will find it genuinely rewarding. Serious birdwatchers and quiet woodland walkers will get the most from it. Dog walkers do well here too - there's proper space and the undergrowth keeps things interesting. On weekends it stays reasonably peaceful, though don't expect isolation.

Timing matters. Early morning or dusk are best for spotting wildlife, and spring and autumn bring the most interesting visitors. The ground can be boggy after rain, so good boots are essential rather than optional.
