Coves Community Park Local Nature Reserve

A proper woodland walk tucked just outside Helensburgh, Coves Community Park Local Nature Reserve is the sort of place you stumble upon and think, why hasn't everyone heard of this? It's small - we're talking maybe an hour round trip - but dense with the kind of scenery that feels a world away from the coast nearby.

You get mixed woodland with burns running through, banking on native trees and some decent mossy sections underfoot. The reserve itself is managed by the community, which shows in the care taken with paths and signage. Birdwatchers tend to find it worthwhile - woodpeckers and various warblers if you're quiet about it. The burn is the real draw though, especially after rain when it's properly active.

It's ideal for families with walkers aged six-plus, though younger kids might find it unremarkable after the first twenty minutes. If you're into fungi or ferns, autumn and spring here repay closer inspection. The ground can be boggy in patches, so proper footwear matters.

Free to access and no fixed hours that I could establish - one of those reserves you visit at your own pace. If you're staying at Hunters Quay Holiday Village, it's just down the road and genuinely worth the drive over. There's nothing flashy about it, but that's rather the point. It's a proper bit of local woodland that gets left to its own devices, and that's increasingly rare.
