Coull Castle Ruins

The ruins sit quietly on a low mound above the River Dee, easy to miss if you're not looking for them. Coull Castle is what remains of a medieval fortress that once mattered to the Aberdeenshire landscape - now just stone foundations and the ghost of its former walls, but enough to fire the imagination on a walk through the Highlands.

You'll find yourself scrambling up rough grass to reach the site, which takes all of five minutes from the nearest lane near Aboyne. The remains aren't vast or particularly dramatic, but there's something rather pleasing about it - no crowds, no visitor centre, just you and 600 years of Scottish history. History buffs will get more from a bit of research beforehand; kids might manage twenty minutes before restlessness sets in. The Dee Valley views are decent, especially if you've just driven through endless forestry plantations.

It's genuinely free and genuinely accessible, though there's no marked path or facilities whatsoever. Best visited when the ground isn't waterlogged - spring or autumn are your window. Allow an hour including the drive from Aboyne itself.

Stay at Aboyne Loch Caravan Park just 2.2 miles away - top-rated and handy for exploring this stretch of Deeside. Tarland Camping is another solid choice 2.7 miles off. Neither is a major detour if you're combining this with proper walking country or the bigger attractions further up the valley. Honest assessment: it's worth a stop if you're in the area already, not worth a special trip on its own.
