Cottons

The woodland around Cottons, just east of Benfleet, is proper Essex forest - nothing dramatic, but genuinely pleasant if you know what to expect. You're looking at mixed woodland with decent footpaths that wind through, giving you actual shade rather than the open parkland you find elsewhere in the county. It's the sort of place where an afternoon disappears without you noticing, especially on a hot day when you want to escape the heat.

Walkers get the most from it. The paths are straightforward enough for families with kids, though it's not going to have the wow factor that might keep under-eights entertained for hours. Teenagers who like a decent walk without the pretension of "proper" hiking will prefer this to many of the cleaner, more curated nature reserves nearby. The forest floor changes through the seasons - spring brings bluebells in patches, autumn turns it all golden and brown.

If you're staying at Essex Glamping or Riverside Village Holiday Park, Cottons works well as a morning or late-afternoon activity. It's close enough not to burn half your holiday on the drive, but far enough that it feels like you've actually gone somewhere. Bring a book, take a slow walk, maybe bring a coffee in a flask. Don't expect visitor facilities - this isn't that kind of place. The nearest town is Benfleet if you need to grab something before you head in, though there's not much reason to hang about there.
