Cottingwood

Cottingwood is a proper forest walk just outside Morpeth, the sort of place that rewards you for leaving the main road without demanding much in return. The woodland here is dense and quiet - oak, beech, and conifers creating that satisfying gloom where you can actually hear yourself think. Paths are reasonably well-marked, though muddy in patches, especially after rain.

The main draw is the simplicity of it. There are no visitor facilities, no gift shop, no car park attendant. You park up nearby and walk. Most people can manage the central loop in an hour or so, though if you're keen to explore deeper into the woodland there's scope for a good two-hour ramble. It's spot-on for families with children old enough to manage uneven ground, and dog walkers absolutely love it here - you'll rarely be alone without spotting at least one spaniel or labrador.

Walkers seeking something beyond a manicured park trail will find this more interesting than you'd expect. The canopy work means the light changes constantly as you move through, and in autumn it's genuinely lovely. Spring brings bluebells in the clearings.

If you're staying at Tranwell Farm Holidays or Hillside Huts & Cabins - both excellent bases nearby - Cottingwood works as a morning outing before heading into Morpeth itself. It's free, naturally. Go early if possible, especially weekends, though even then you won't fight crowds.
