Cotterdale House

The entrance to Cotterdale House is easy to miss if you're not paying attention - just a modest opening in the hillside near Hawes, but step inside and you're immediately in another world. This is a proper cave system, the sort of place where limestone walls close in around you and the air feels different. It's not a showpiece attraction with handrails and electric lights; instead it rewards anyone willing to duck, squeeze, and explore on their own terms.

What makes Cotterdale House worth the detour is the genuine sense of discovery. You're not herded through on a fixed route. The cave opens into chambers with interesting rock formations, and there's enough space to feel like you're actually exploring rather than just walking through a tunnel.
