Cotter Force

The walk down to Cotter Force from near Hawes takes about twenty minutes and it's proper worth it. You're heading into Wensleydale, following the River Cottedale as it narrows and gets more interesting, until suddenly you're standing in front of a waterfall that drops about 20 metres into a dark pool below. The force itself isn't massive - nothing like the Lake District's big hitters - but there's something about the steep-sided valley and the way the water crashes down that makes it feel wilder than it actually is.

It's best visited after heavy rain when the flow is decent, otherwise it can feel a bit underwhelming. Spring's good, autumn better. The approach path is straightforward enough but can get muddy and a bit slippery near the bottom, so proper footwear matters. You're looking at an hour round trip if you're dawdling and taking photos, which you will be.

Walkers will absolutely get the most out of this - it's the kind of spot that rewards you for leaving the car. Families with young kids should check their ankle strength; it's doable but not pushchair territory. If you're staying at one of the local campsites - Hawes Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is closest at just over two miles away - this makes an easy afternoon outing without needing to drive far. Combine it with a walk up Pen-y-ghent or a pint in Hawes itself and you've got a proper day sorted.
