Cotter End

The walk up Cotter End from Hawes takes you straight into proper fell country. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a steady climb through moorland with views that open up the further you go. The summit itself sits at 674 metres and offers wide views across Wensleydale and towards the higher peaks beyond. On a clear day you can pick out the sweep of the valley floor far below.

This is walker territory, not a tourist trap. You're looking at a couple of hours round trip from town, depending on your pace and where you start from. The path is well-trodden but can be boggy after rain - proper hiking boots recommended. Most people combine it with other walks in the area rather than making it a standalone trip.

Families with confident walkers will manage fine. Young kids might find it a bit of a slog for what amounts to a moorland ridge rather than a dramatic summit photo opportunity. The real appeal is the walking itself and the sense of being out on the fells.

If you're based at Hawes Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, it's virtually on your doorstep - less than four miles away. The other sites at Cherish Glamping and Usha Gap Farm are within easy driving distance too. It fits naturally into a walking holiday in Wensleydale, combining well with other peaks in the area. Go early in the day to avoid the crowds, though honestly you won't find many people up here even in peak season.
