Cottage Plantation

Walking into Cottage Plantation feels like stepping into someone's private woodland - which, to be fair, it practically is. This quiet forest sits just inland from the New Forest edges near Southampton, and it's the sort of place locals know about but tourists often miss entirely.

The trees here are proper dense. You're talking mature broadleaf woodland with plenty of shade, which makes it brilliant in summer when everywhere else is rammed. The paths wind through without any of the manicured feel you get in some country estates - it's working forest rather than show-off landscape. Allow a good hour if you want to explore properly without rushing, though you could do a quick 20-minute loop if time's tight.

Walkers will get the most out of this. It's not dramatic or challenging, but it's peaceful in a way that quiets your brain. Families with younger kids might find it a touch dull after a while - there's no playground or visitor centre to break things up, just trees and paths. History types should know this isn't ancient woodland, but it's got character.

Being so close to Lepe Beach Campsite makes this a natural add-on if you're camping in the area. You could easily combine it with a morning here before heading to the coast for the afternoon. The nearby holiday parks at Sunnycott and Comforts Farm are within easy reach too.

Free access, as far as anyone can tell - just turn up and walk. No facilities that I could spot, so bring what you need. Best visited outside school holidays when it's quieter.
