The New Forest stretches across Hampshire like a proper breathing space, and Cottage Lodge Plantation sits within it - a dense woodland block that feels a world away from Southampton's sprawl, even though you're barely twenty minutes from the city. This is ancient forestry: tall conifers mixed with native broadleaf trees, the kind of place where the light filters green through the canopy and the ground stays soft with decades of needles and leaf litter.

It's a walker's spot, full stop. No playground nonsense, no visitor centres - just paths threading through the trees. You'll see fallow deer if you're quiet enough, and the forest has that particular hush that makes you walk slower and breathe deeper. An hour is comfortable, three hours if you want to really lose yourself. Families with older kids who can manage a bit of uneven terrain will appreciate it; younger ones might tire of "just trees" after forty minutes.

Staying at Lepe Beach Campsite just down the road gives you easy access, and the forest pairs nicely with a proper New Forest itinerary - this is genuine woodland exploration rather than tourist-trap stuff. It's free, obviously. Bring waterproofs though; Hampshire forest floors stay damp even when the sky looks clear. If you're after manicured trails and information boards, look elsewhere. If you want to actually feel like you've walked through forest rather than visited an attraction, this works.
