Cottage Farm Nature Reserve

You'll find Cottage Farm Nature Reserve just outside Omagh, tucked away in the rolling countryside where the Sperrins loom in the distance. It's a proper working landscape - part nature reserve, part active farm - which means you're not just walking through a manicured park but seeing land that's actually used and managed for both wildlife and farming.

The reserve draws walkers and birdwatchers mainly. There are woodland trails that take you through mature trees, and open grassland where you might spot lapwings or curlews depending on the season. The paths are straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes or so. Spring and early summer are the best times - the bird activity picks up and the wildflowers are out.

What makes it work is the lack of crowds. You won't queue or fight for space like you do at some nature reserves. It's the sort of place you wander for an hour, maybe ninety minutes, and feel like you've had a proper bit of countryside without the faffing about. Given it's near Gortin Glen Glamping - which is excellent if you're basing yourself in the area - you could easily combine a morning walk here with a stay at one of the local glamping spots.

There's no visitor centre or facilities worth mentioning, so bring what you need. Admission appears to be free, which is refreshing. It's not a destination in itself, but as part of exploring the Omagh area and the Sperrins, it's well worth an hour of your time.
