Cotswold Contemporary Burford

A converted stone building on Burford's high street houses this contemporary art space, and it's worth ducking inside if you're passing through. The gallery shows rotating exhibitions of modern work - paintings, sculpture, photography - often featuring artists with Cotswolds connections or exploring rural themes. It's small enough not to eat into your day, but substantial enough that art lovers won't feel short-changed. The space itself is lovely; proper old Cotswold bones with clean white walls and good natural light.

You'll get the most from this if you actually care about contemporary art rather than viewing it as a tourist obligation. Families with teenagers interested in creative work will find it engaging. Younger kids might lose patience after 20 minutes or so. The beauty is that Burford itself is worth exploring - bookshops, decent pubs, the medieval church - so you can make an afternoon of it without the gallery carrying the whole visit.

It makes a natural stop if you're based at Wysdom Touring Park, just over the road, or any of the other caravan sites clustered nearby.
