Cotland Hill

Cotland Hill isn't the sort of peak that stops you in your tracks from the car park. You've got to earn the view, and once you're up there, it's genuinely rewarding - proper rolling countryside stretching south towards the Solway, with Merrick visible on a clear day if you know where to look. The walk from Newton Stewart takes a couple of hours there and back, nothing too gnarly but steep enough in patches to keep you honest.

History buffs will appreciate that you're standing on land with Iron Age settlement traces, though there's not much to see bar the landscape itself. The real pull is the walk itself - moorland and rough grass underfoot, with that particular Scottish Lowland quiet that catches you off guard if you're used to busier ridges. It's the kind of place where you notice things: golden eagle country, genuinely.

Walkers will get proper value from this one. Kids over ten might enjoy it if they're keen on the outdoors rather than maintained paths and visitor facilities. Families staying at Drumroamin Farm just up the road have a solid afternoon option here without driving far. Allow three hours all in if you're not rushing and fancy sitting at the top with a flask.

Go on a clear day - visibility is everything on these hills, and a misty Cotland Hill is just bog and cloud. Early morning gets you there before the weather turns.
