Cotbers Wood

The woodland around Cotbers, just outside Appleby-in-Westmorland, is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - which is precisely why it works. Ancient broadleaf forest with proper mossy floors and the kind of dappled light that makes you want to walk slower than you actually do.

It's walker territory, really. The paths wind through decent-sized oaks and beeches, and there's enough variation in the terrain to keep things interesting without being brutal. You're looking at an hour or two depending on how much you dawdle, and honestly, dawdling is encouraged. The canopy's thick enough that even on drizzly days it feels almost sheltered, which in Cumbria is a genuine asset.

Families with older kids will get on fine here. Younger ones might lose interest if you're not mixing it with a proper destination or a stream to poke about in. It's genuinely quiet - you won't be battling crowds - but equally it's not the sort of place that'll hold your attention for half a day on its own.

If you're staying at Wild Rose Holiday Park nearby, this is an easy addon to a morning. Free to access, no facilities that I could find, so bring what you need. Best in autumn when the floor's carpeted with leaves, or spring when the understory comes alive. Worth the detour if you're in the area and fancy a proper woodland walk, but don't rearrange your itinerary specially for it.
