Cossington Lakes

You'll find Cossington Lakes just outside Leicester, a proper countryside surprise that most locals only stumble upon by accident. It's a series of flooded quarries turned into a wildlife haven, with walking paths that loop around the water and plenty of spots to stop and actually look at things rather than just march through.

The lakes themselves are peaceful in the way that only places where people actually come to watch birds tend to be. Herons, grebes, the occasional kingfisher if you're lucky and patient. There's a visitor centre with the useful information boards, and the walking is genuinely decent - flat enough that you won't feel like you've been punished by lunchtime, but interesting enough that you won't finish it in twenty minutes.

It's the sort of place where families with younger kids will get a good couple of hours out of it without anyone dissolving into boredom. Birdwatchers and photographers will lose entire afternoons. The main circuit takes around an hour or so depending on how often you stop to peer at things through binoculars.

If you're staying at Hill Top Caravan Park just down the road, this makes an excellent half-day outing that doesn't feel like you're fighting crowds or paying a fortune. Admission is free, which is always welcome. Go early if you want decent light for photos or actually want to spot wildlife rather than just see empty water. It's not going to change your life, but it's exactly what a decent nature reserve should be.
