Corris Steam Railway Museum and Railway - check website for opening times

The railway line closed in 1948, but someone had the good sense to resurrect it. The Corris Steam Railway now runs vintage trains through the Dulas Valley, and if you've got even a passing fondness for steam engines, it's genuinely worth the drive from Dolgellau.

You'll ride behind proper heritage locomotives - the kind that belch coal smoke and rattle across Victorian-era track. The journey itself isn't vast - we're talking a scenic loop rather than an epic cross-country haul - but the whole experience has real charm. The museum bits show off railway memorabilia and restored carriages, which tells you something about what passenger travel was actually like a century ago. Not Instagram-friendly, but absorbing.

Families with younger kids might manage an hour or so; serious railway enthusiasts will spend half a day here. The trains only run seasonally, so check the website before you go - nothing worse than arriving to find everything closed. Allow a couple of hours if you're combining the ride with the museum.

If you're based at Gwerniago Campsite nearby, this makes a solid alternative to whatever wet-weather options Mid Wales throws at you. The Dyfi Valley around here has proper walking territory too, so you could spin it into a proper outing rather than just popping by for twenty minutes. Not groundbreaking, but the kind of thing that sticks with you.
