Cornwall Wildlife Trust nature reserve

The Cornwall Wildlife Trust reserve sits just outside Looe, and it's one of those places where you actually see wildlife rather than just reading about it on a board. Marshland, woodland, and coastal scrub all crammed together in a few acres - the kind of terrain that genuinely surprises you with what emerges from the undergrowth.

Walkers get the most from it, especially birders who know what they're looking for. You can spend two hours here or twenty minutes depending on your pace and whether you stop to watch the herons properly. Families with young kids might find it a bit too low-key - there's no play area or cafe, just paths and birds and the occasional flash of movement in the reeds.

The whole point is quiet observation. Bring binoculars. Late morning tends to be better for spotting things than midday when everything's gone to ground. If the light's right and you're patient, you'll see why locals bother with the place.

It works perfectly as a half-day addition to a park holiday - Tencreek and Killigarth Manor are both within spitting distance, so you can easily slot it into a morning before heading back for lunch. Not a destination in itself, but absolutely worth an hour if you're staying nearby and the weather's cooperative. Don't expect manicured gardens or visitor facilities. This is proper conservation work on display, not a day out dressed up as nature.
