CORNES MEADOW

The meadow sits just outside Ashford, a proper slice of Kent wetland that doesn't shout about itself. You're looking at open grassland dotted with wildflowers depending on the season, the kind of place where a pair of binoculars actually gets used rather than left in the car boot.

It's a nature reserve, so expect walking trails and the chance to spot birds, insects, and the occasional deer if you're lucky and quiet about it. The paths are easy enough for families with younger kids, though there's not much in the way of facilities - bring a packed lunch if you want to linger. Allow an hour or two depending on how seriously you're taking the birdwatching.

Historically it matters too. Cornes Meadow has been managed for wildlife for decades, and that hands-on approach shows in what actually thrives here. It's the sort of place naturalists and keen photographers will get genuine value from, while families looking for a gentle walk between glamping stays at Go Glamp or Wood View Farm will find it a welcome break from site activities.

Free to visit, as far as these reserves typically are. Best times are spring and early summer when the wildflowers are proper show-stopping and the birds are more active. It won't keep you entertained all day, but it's well worth the short drive from Ashford if you're already in the area and fancy something low-key and genuinely wild.
