Corinium Museum

The Corinium Museum sits right in the heart of Cirencester, a town that was once the second-largest settlement in Roman Britain. Walk in and you're confronted with proper Roman artifacts - mosaics, sculptures, coins, everyday objects that suddenly make 2,000 years collapse into nothing. The star piece is the Hunting Dogs mosaic, which is genuinely stunning and oddly moving when you realize someone commissioned it for their villa floor all those centuries ago.

It's a solid afternoon stop for anyone interested in archaeology or Roman history, though it's not vast. You'll spend a good hour here if you actually read the displays rather than just walking past. Kids over ten will probably find it engaging, especially if you point out the gory bits about gladiators and weapons. Younger ones might flag after twenty minutes.

Being in Cirencester proper means it's a short walk from town - no messing about with driving to some remote country location. If you're camping at Cirencester Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, it's barely a mile away. Even Hoburne Cotswold, the better-rated option further out, makes it an easy half-hour visit on a rainy afternoon when the weather turns on you. The Cotswolds in general rewards wandering, and Cirencester is one of the few places where the town center actually justifies a proper look-around. Admission is typically free or a few quid - very reasonable either way.
