Corgarff Castle

The approach to Corgarff Castle is genuinely dramatic - you're driving up a narrow Glen Livet road with the Cairngorms rising either side, and then suddenly this five-storey tower appears, surrounded by a star-shaped fortification that looks straight out of a 17th-century military handbook. It's a proper working fortress, built in 1537, and you can feel the difference the moment you arrive.

Inside, the tower is small and compact - no grand halls here, just the real business of keeping warm and staying alive in one of Scotland's bleakest corners. The narrow stone stairs spiral up through four floors, each with its own cramped room and murder holes. It's the kind of place where history stops being abstract and becomes very, very physical. Kids find the compact scale brilliant - they can actually explore the whole thing in twenty minutes without hitting what-are-we-even-doing fatigue.

What makes it special is the isolation. You're standing in Strathdon, one of the quieter parts of Aberdeenshire, and the landscape just swallows you. The star fort is unusual for Scotland, a Hanoverian addition from 1748, which gives the whole site an oddly cosmopolitan feel for somewhere so remote.
