Corfham Castle

The earthworks here are what grab you first - massive banks and ditches that rise out of the Shropshire landscape like something the land itself threw up. Corfham Castle is a motte-and-bailey fort, the sort of Norman stronghold that's been quietly crumbling for nearly a thousand years, and there's real drama in what's left of it. You can walk the perimeter, trace where the timber palisade once stood, and get a proper sense of how these early medieval lords carved out their territory. The site sits on high ground, which means the views across the surrounding countryside are genuinely excellent - that's partly why they built it there, of course. History buffs will spend a good hour poking around and imagining the garrison going about their business. Families with energetic kids will find enough to explore for thirty to forty minutes, though there's no playground or visitor centre to speak of - this is archaeology in its rawest form. It's free to access and open year-round, being essentially a field with significant lumps in it. Church Stretton is close by, so you can easily combine this with a market-town wander or a proper walk in the Long Mynd. For anyone staying at one of the nearby parks - Wheathill or Greenway are both within striking distance - it's worth a detour on a decent day. Just bring decent boots and don't expect facilities. The bones of the place tell their own story if you're willing to look.
