Coppy Plantation is a working forest on Derbyshire's outskirts, close enough to Derby that you can be among the trees within twenty minutes of the town centre. It's the sort of place where a two-hour wander feels restorative rather than exhausting, with a network of tracks threading through the plantation that suit families as much as serious walkers. The ground is soft with decades of dropped needles, which is either lovely underfoot or a bit monotonous depending on your mood - there's not the variety of a mixed woodland, but if you want conifers and solitude, you've found it. Most people allow an hour to ninety minutes here. It works brilliantly as a break during a longer Derbyshire stay, particularly if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping sites like Broadleaves or Hill Farm - both within walking distance - where you can stretch your legs before heading back for lunch. The plantation doesn't have the dramatic views of some Peak District spots, but it's free to explore and rarely crowded. Kids under eight might find it a touch samey after forty minutes, while older children and adults hunting for forest bathing will take what they came for. Go midweek if possible. Weekends can bring mountain bikers, which changes the atmosphere entirely.
