Copper Hill

The highest point in Lincolnshire sounds grander than it actually is - Copper Hill rises to just 168 metres, which means the view from the top feels more like standing on a glorified molehill than a proper mountain. That said, there's something oddly satisfying about bagging the county's peak, especially if you're already in the area around Grantham.

The walk up takes minutes rather than hours, and the surrounding countryside spreads out in gentle, rolling waves - quintessential East Midlands farmland rather than dramatic scenery. It's the kind of place where locals come to stretch their legs on a Sunday afternoon, not somewhere you'll queue for photos. The real appeal lies in the walk itself rather than what you see from the top. On a clear day you can pick out distant landmarks, but come midweek and you might have the whole thing to yourself.

Families with young kids will find it manageable, though don't expect them to be thrilled by the views. Serious peak-baggers should manage expectations - this is gentle countryside rambling, not an Alpine experience. If you're staying at Wagtail Country Park just five miles away, it's worth an hour of your time as a break from the park itself. Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though there's little in the way of facilities nearby. Spring and autumn offer the clearest light, and the walk feels less exposed when it's not baking hot. Go if you're in the area; don't detour specially.
