Cononley Village Playground

A modest playground wedged into the heart of Cononley village, just outside Keighley, where the Pennine foothills start to roll properly. There's nothing flashy about it - a handful of swings, a slide, maybe some climbing frames - but that's rather the point. Kids burn off energy while you grab a breather on a bench, and it's free, which matters when you're camping nearby.

The playground sits in a village that's proper Yorkshire stone and terraced houses, the kind of place that hasn't tried to reinvent itself for tourists. Best for families with younger children who need an hour's worth of outdoor play without the fanfare of a major attraction. Teenagers will be bored within ten minutes, mind you.

If you're staying at one of the local campsites - Draughton Heights or Brown Bank are closest, barely four miles away - Cononley makes a useful pit stop rather than a destination. The village itself has a few local shops and pubs if you want to stretch your legs properly. Head to Keighley itself if you need more substantial entertainment, though the drive's only ten minutes or so.

The real draw here is the stepping stone into walks across the Pennine moorland beyond. The playground sorts the kids out, then you've got Brontë country and proper hiking territory on your doorstep. It's functional rather than fancy, but that's exactly what a village playground should be.
