Compton Badge

You'll find Compton Badge perched on the chalky slopes south of Salisbury, a modest Bronze Age earthwork that rewards a proper walk more than it dazzles from afar. It's essentially an Iron Age hill fort - a defensive enclosure marked by banks and ditches that once protected ancient settlement, though these days it's just grass-covered ridges you can trace with your feet.

The appeal here isn't Instagram-ready views or towering monuments. It's the sense of standing where people actually lived three thousand years ago, the physical evidence of their choices carved into the landscape. On a clear day you get decent views across the Wiltshire countryside towards Salisbury, and the walk itself through chalk downland is proper pleasant - the sort of ramble that justifies a weekend in the area.

Walkers get the most from this one. Kids might lose interest after twenty minutes unless they're already hill-fort enthusiasts, which let's face it, most aren't. History buffs will appreciate the quietness - no crowds, no interpretation boards, just you and the archaeology.

It's free, naturally, and takes maybe an hour including the walk up. Late spring through early autumn are best, when the downland's at its greenest. If you're staying at Marshwood Farm Camping or Chalke Valley Camping nearby - both excellent - it's absolutely worth adding to your walking list, though don't expect Stonehenge-level drama. It's the genuine article, just modest about it.
