Comps Shaw

You're in proper woodland territory here - Comps Shaw is a decent slice of Sussex forest just outside Newhaven, the sort of place that rewards a ramble without demanding much in return. Ancient trees, tangled undergrowth, and the kind of quiet you don't get near the coast. It's genuinely wild in patches, which means it works best for people who actually like walking rather than just tolerating it.

Walkers will find their time well spent. The canopy's thick enough to matter on hot days, and there are proper paths threading through rather than manicured trails. Families with young kids should manage fine if they're the exploring type - it's not a theme park, so expect actual nature rather than features. You'll need a good hour minimum to do it justice, though you can pick your own adventure depending on mood and stamina.

Time your visit for autumn if you can - the light through the leaves is striking, and the forest floor's cracking with colour. Spring works too. Summer gets muggy, and winter's muddy as hell unless you've had dry spells.

If you're staying at Three Ponds Holiday Park just down the road, this is the obvious woodland option within walking distance. The Secret Campsite's slightly further but worth the drive if you're based there and after a proper forest fix. Golden Cross is decent too, though slightly further out. Entry appears to be free, which is refreshing - no ticket booth, no fuss, just you and the trees.
