Compass Cove Beach

The beach at Compass Cove isn't what you'd call a destination in itself - it's more of a pleasant discovery if you're already rambling around Paignton's seafront. A modest strip of shingle and sand tucked between higher ground, it's the kind of spot locals know and visitors stumble upon by accident.

What you get is straightforward: a relatively quiet beach with decent views across the bay. The cove faces south, so you catch proper light for most of the day. It's not dramatic or wild - don't expect soaring cliffs or golden dunes. Instead, it's functional and a bit sheltered, which means families with small children won't spend the afternoon wrestling the wind.

Walkers will find this useful as a loop break rather than a final destination. The approach from Paignton takes maybe twenty minutes on foot, and the shingle isn't great for lingering if you're looking for sandcastle territory. At high tide, the beach shrinks considerably.

If you're staying at South Bay Holiday Park or Start Bay further afield, Compass Cove works as a quieter alternative to Paignton's busier stretches. You won't queue for anything. You won't find facilities beyond what the town offers. It's free, obviously, and you can stay as long as you like.

Honestly? It's fine. Not worth planning a day around, but pleasant enough for a morning stroll if the weather's cooperating and you're in the area anyway.
