Common Hill

The walk up Common Hill from Auchterarder takes about an hour and rewards you with proper Perthshire views - rolling farmland stretching south towards the Ochils, and on a clear day you can pick out the Forth Valley beyond. It's not a dramatic summit; more of a genuine working hilltop where locals have walked for centuries, with decent paths most of the way up and just enough scramble at the top to feel like you've earned the effort.

History buffs will appreciate that this was a droving route once - cattle herds heading south would pass through here. The landscape tells that story if you know to look for it. Families with reasonably fit kids will manage the ascent without drama, though the wind can be sharp up there even when it's calm below.

Go early morning if you want solitude, or late afternoon for better light on the surrounding hills. The walk itself is free, obviously. Allow two hours minimum if you're lingering at the top with a packed lunch.

It slots well into a Perthshire break. Alexander House is just down the road towards Auchterarder if you want to stay put, or push a bit further to Greenhill Farm Glamping and use Common Hill as part of a broader walking circuit. The hill works best combined with other local walks rather than as a standalone destination - it's solid rather than spectacular, but exactly the kind of thing that makes a weekend in Perthshire feel properly spent.
