Common Copse

The woodland floor here is soft underfoot, carpeted with last season's leaves and moss that makes walking almost silent. Common Copse is a proper forest reserve just outside Petersfield, the kind of place locals know well but visitors often miss entirely. You're walking through mixed woodland - oak, beech, and birch mostly - with the kind of dappled light that makes you actually want to slow down rather than rush through.

It's ideal for people who like their nature walks without the faffing about. No visitor centre, no facilities that I could find, just forest. The paths are well-trodden enough that you won't get lost, but they feel genuinely woodland rather than engineered. You might spot woodland birds if you're quiet, or just enjoy the fact that your phone's definitely getting no signal. Give yourself an hour minimum, longer if you want to properly wander.

For families with younger kids, the lack of facilities could be a pain - there's nowhere to grab a coffee after - but older children and proper walkers will find it rewarding. It's a genuine nature experience rather than a tourist attraction, which is either exactly what you want or completely not.

The forest works well as a morning outing if you're based at Woodlands Camping just three and a half miles away, or Hampshire Hills if you're after something with more creature comforts. It's the sort of place that makes a quiet midweek break actually feel like a break.
