Commando Gunner Memorial

A granite memorial overlooking the Tavy Valley marks where 40 Royal Marine commandos trained during the Second World War. It's a sobering spot - just a simple stone with a plaque, but the location tells you everything about why they chose it. The moorland around here is exposed, brutal terrain, perfect for preparing men for amphibious raids.

You'll find it on Dartmoor proper, a short walk from the road near Horndon. The views across the valley are tremendous - rolling hills, gorse, and that particular quality of light that makes the moor feel haunted. If you're interested in military history or walking, it's worth the detour. Kids might find the walk more interesting than the memorial itself - there's no visitor centre, no interpretation board beyond the plaque. It's just you and the wind and 80 years of history.

The nearest settlement is Plymouth, but frankly you come here as part of a wider moorland ramble rather than as a standalone destination. It works well with a stay at Dartmoor Domes - the glamping pods are only six miles away, making this an easy morning walk before breakfast. Allow 30 minutes there and back from the nearest parking, longer if you're exploring the wider footpath network. Best in dry weather; the mud here is proper sticky after rain.

No facilities, no charge. Bring water and decent boots. It's a quiet memorial to men who rarely made it home.
