Coming Home

Coming Home is a gallery tucked away in Oxfordshire that trades in contemporary art and works exploring themes of displacement, memory, and belonging. The sort of place that makes you think rather than simply gawk. It's not a massive operation - more intimate than that - so you won't be queuing round the block or spending three hours here unless you're genuinely engrossed.

The work tends toward photography, installation, and mixed media, with shows rotating regularly. What struck me was how seriously they take curation without becoming pretentious about it. The space itself feels welcoming rather than austere, which matters when you're dealing with potentially heavy subject matter.

This is really for people who actually care about contemporary art - art students, the photography-minded, anyone who's tired of the standard heritage narrative. If your family is dragging their heels round the Ashmolean and wants a break, Coming Home won't save you. But if you're based at Lincoln Farm Park Partnership or Hardwick Parks and want an afternoon in Oxford that goes beyond the obvious tourist loop, it's well worth tracking down.

Given it's close to Oxford, you can easily pair it with a walk round the colleges or a punt if the weather's decent. Check ahead for opening times and what's on - shows change, and gallery hours can be erratic. Entry was free when I visited, though donations are encouraged. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if something really grabs you.
