Combs Wood

The woodland floor here is thick with leaf litter and the kind of quiet you don't get many places these days. Combs Wood sits just east of Ipswich, a proper stretch of native woodland that rewards a slow walk rather than a quick march through. You'll find yourself among oak and ash, with the occasional clearing where light filters through properly. It's the sort of place where you notice things - a particular bird call, the way the path dips unexpectedly, mushrooms clustered at a tree base.

Walkers will absolutely get the most from this. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no marked trails with explanatory signs - it's just you and the woodland doing what it does. That's either brilliant or tedious depending on your outlook. Families with young kids keen on exploring and turning over logs will have a decent hour here; those expecting activities or facilities should look elsewhere. The ground can be wet and muddy even days after rain, so proper boots matter.

There's no entrance fee that I'm aware of, and you can turn up whenever suits you. The real value comes in combining it with a stay at one of the nearby parks - Wheathill or Stonham Barns are both within easy reach and well-rated. From there, Combs Wood works as a morning ramble before heading elsewhere for lunch. It's not dramatic or showy, but it's authentic Suffolk woodland, and that counts for something if you're not after Instagram moments.
