Combe Down Tunnel (Southern Portal)

The southern entrance to Combe Down Tunnel sits just outside Bradford-on-Avon like a mouth frozen mid-yawn - a grand Victorian engineering statement carved straight into the hillside. This isn't some Instagram novelty; it's a proper piece of industrial archaeology that once carried the Midland Railway through Somerset. Walking up to it from the town, you get a real sense of the scale and ambition Victorian engineers threw at the landscape.

The portal itself is the main draw - a substantial stone arch with dressed masonry that speaks to serious money and serious effort. You can walk right up to the entrance, though the tunnel itself remains blocked (and has done for years). On a clear day the views back towards Bradford-on-Avon are decent, and there's something quite satisfying about standing at this threshold and imagining the roar of steam engines emerging from the darkness.

It's a quick visit - fifteen minutes maximum, really - but genuinely worthwhile if you're already exploring the area around Bradford-on-Avon. History buffs and industrial archaeology types will find it absorbing; families with younger kids might lose interest once they've clambered about the entrance. The walk from town is pleasant and takes about twenty minutes.
