The walk through Column Plantation near Thornhill is straightforward enough - a forest trail that doesn't demand much in the way of preparation or fitness. What you get is a proper Scottish woodland experience without the crowds you'd find at more famous spots. The path winds through mature trees, and on a decent day the light filters through in that soft way that makes you understand why people bother with forest walks at all.

Allow ninety minutes to two hours depending on pace and how much you linger. The main limitation is that once you've done the circuit, there's not much reason to return. It's worth doing once while you're passing through Dumfries & Galloway, but don't reorganise your itinerary around it.
